10 face-kicking songs that better be in Green Day Rock Band

"Panic Song"

From: Insomniac (1995)

Simply because the opening is an epic, constantly escalating, two-minute stream of musical genius that explodes into a furious blast of angry vocal energy. It's a must-have for the disc, plain and simple. It'll be a painful test of endurance for all involved, but holy shit. Please, Harmonix. Please.

"Jesus of Suburbia"

From: American Idiot (2004)

For the sake of brevity we limited this list to 10 songs. As fans we could have just pasted their entire catalog and said "GIMME," but we have to draw the line somewhere. And while we have strong feelings that this album will be in full effect, will they include the nine minute Jesus of Suburbia? As an extra-long but highly popular song, this one reeks of "DLC."

What say you? What tracks do you want to see in the finished release? Let us know in the comments! And if you hate Green Day, this is totally the place where you should post how much they suck, how they're huge sellouts and band XX is so much better. Because your complaints will assuredly not fall on deaf ears and will probably finally convince everyone that you're right, and your musical tastes are superior.

I love Green Day if you couldn't tell from my name. But I have to say that I'm really kinda disappointed in them for not pushing for a M rating, I mean they did it with wal-mart for '21st Century Breakdown' didn't they? Why not do it here? By the way, I like all of Green Day's songs. There I said it, so sue me.

Am I the only one who enjoys their new stuff along with the old?
  • UnfitParrot - March 16, 2010 11:10 p.m.

I for one hope all these songs make it on the real game and look forward to buying it!
  • Vitoruss1 - March 16, 2010 7:08 p.m.

Wow... Greenday fanboy, much? This game is selling-out exemplified. Changing their lyrics to sell a game? If I was in the band I would've demanded the explicit lyrics to stay in. Like it's so wrong to release an M rated music-game? The true fans are going to have to just settle with what they get, and the people who want a family game should just NOT BUY THE GAME. If you like Greenday, you like swearing. Don't try to cross cleanliness with punk rock. Blaugh.

@bar1scorpio: Since when the hell has Green Day been Jock Rock, or in any way comparable to Nickelback? @StrayGator: a SunnO))) set would be the strangest video game experience most people would ever have. :D Also, to anyone who declares that everything past Dookie is unworthy pop pap, I ask you what is the pop appeal of songs like Platypus or Take Back? reCaptcha: gherkins conference
  • StrayGator - March 16, 2010 3:29 p.m.

"Pure, unrestrained boredom" - a phrase to treasure. exemplifies why gams jernalism have strode long ways from it's narrow & limited roots. Next I'd love to see Rock Band: SunnO))) - A real test of stamina.

even though it is censored, at least it's better than "poker face" >.<

Have to agree with you Brett on your choices, I like you think the older the better with Green Day
  • jmcgrotty - March 16, 2010 9:04 a.m.

Wish I could edit my posts... 2000 isn't on 39/Smooth. Is on Kerplunk.
  • jmcgrotty - March 16, 2010 9:01 a.m.

First and foremost, as others have said, if/when this is censored, it is an automatic "do not purchase." As for tracks, Gotta disagree with a few of your points and give you big props on other parts. First, there should not be a single track from Insomniac/Nimrod/Warning/Shenanigans. Please please please, I beg that this whole period must be forgotten. Now as for what you did list, 39/Smooth and 1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hours should be represented but not with the tracks you suggested and definitely not with 2000 Light Years Away. That song sucks donkey eggs. Again though, this is all irrelevant if they censor the songs (but please don't say that the band is one of the cussiest around. That just makes you look stupid).

i could already see it...Jesus of Suburbia as a "Song you play while the credits roll"...awesome!!!!
  • bar1scorpio - March 16, 2010 4:57 a.m.

I've never seen this many gamers excited for a Jock Rock song list before. How about Rock Band: Nickleback next!
  • Cwf2008 - March 16, 2010 4:45 a.m.

Who gives a fuck would be the better question

Brett, I didn't like your comment about TB:RB on the podcast or here. There were songs from almost every album in there and the full album DLC just filled the gaps. Abbey Road was by no means missing from vanilla TB:RB.

@Brett I said the wrong song, I meant the second half, Jaded. A Harmonix employee failed the song on drums at GDC, and a lot of sources were describing the song as if it were some insanely hard track. I hope this doesn't sound arrogant, but I just feel that as an expert drummer that the overlap will be too darn stale to stay interesting, and that if the only difficulty in the song is the speed then it'll just be too boring for me. I do agree that a lot of the songs in Beatles were boring as heck on drums, but there was quite a lot of variation, and definitely a handful of really interesting songs (on expert at least). Their earlier songs were all quite samey and dull, but I felt like there was enough of their later songs in the game with wildly different drum styles and patterns in there. Compare, say, Helter Skelter, Within You Without You and Good Morning Good Morning and you've got three completely different charting to play. But with Green Day, I just can't see/hear that. Maybe I'm just being ignorant and naive (and granted stuff like Panic Song and King for a Day would be pretty awesome to play), but most of their songs are pretty formulaic drum-wise. You say "This time there'll be tons of pedal and lots of movement around the pads," but I'm not so sure. My concern is that most Green Day songs sound very similar on the drums. The majority seem to utilise the hi-hat, snare and bass drum far, far more than anything else, without much variety. Sure, the choruses use ride or crash cymbals, and there's plenty of fills, but nothing all that unique. Which works just fine in terms of this straight-forward punk sound that Green Day has, but in terms of if being interesting and fun to play it's definitely lacking. I hope it doesn't sound like I'm just insulting Green Day, I have no problem with them as a band. But in terms of RB, I much prefer fun, interesting, varying and challenging songs, and I just can't picture these Green Day songs fulfilling that desire. I'll stop rambling now.

I don't really care one way or another about Green Day. I've never heard most of their catalog, but what I have sounds okay. I don't think they warrant their own game, but since it's coming regardless of what I think, why would they censor it? That's bullshit.
  • OfficerProblem - March 16, 2010 12:57 a.m.

Yeah...screw those sell out's They should have kept their sound and look to stay in the underground where they only let the really cool kids in after school.... Whether you actually beleive they ever really changed their sound from one album to the next (or any more so than any other band in history) or not...the reaction from the 'underground' for the last 15 damn years proves them 110% right for doing it.
  • GoldenMe - March 16, 2010 12:22 a.m.

Just no. This generation of music is pure disappointment covered with failure. Do Not Want.
  • bonerachieved - March 15, 2010 10:39 p.m.

They're totally going to pull a Beatles Rockband Bull**** where you can buy it on XBLA or whatever.
  • JizzyB - March 15, 2010 10:27 p.m.

Taste my Haterade: Green Day is crap. They are huge sell-outs. The only bigger "punk" sell-outs are No Doubt. Dookie was a good album but everything since has been pop smut. Alright, I'm done. Just had to get that off my chest.
